About Camp Surefire

Save-the-date: Camp Surefire 2012

August 20th-August 24th

Camp Surefire, Rhode Island’s only camp for children and teens with diabetes, recently completed its 14th season and its 3rd season under the leadership of The Camp Surefire Foundation.

Camp Surefire has a full staff of volunteer counselors and medical professionals who work around the clock to keep our campers happy and safe. While at camp, kids meet other kids with diabetes, and learn from older campers, counselors, and staff. Many of our campers have grown to become counselors, and serve as role models for the next generation.

Camp Surefire reached full capacity for the first time in 2010. As a result, Camp Surefire relocated to our new home at the University of Rhode Island W. Alton Jones campus in West Greenwich, RI. In 2011, we hosted  80 campers, 10 LITs and 25 counselors at the wonderful facilities at Alton Jones.  We are looking forward to returning to Alton Jones in the summer of 2012.

Our camp program includes our traditional Youth Program for children ages 6-12. In the past, younger campers attended a half-week program. For the first time this year, all campers participated in the full 5-day camp experience. Campers in the Youth Program were divided into smaller age-based groups for different camp activities.

2011 was also the inaugural year for the newly designed Teen Program for ages 13-14 year olds to accommodate our many campers now in this age bracket. Campers participated in special diabetes education seminars as well as other team-building and leadership exercises.

The creation of our new “Leaders-in-Training” or LIT Program, designed for 15-16 year olds, was a huge success.  During camp, LITs assisted with the Youth Program as well as participated in some of the Teen Program activities.  We look forward to the continued growth of the LIT Program in 2012.
