counselors

Most of our volunteer counselors had previously been to Camp Surefire (either as a past camper/LIT or as a counselor). More than half of our counselors have diabetes themselves. All (100%) of our counselors dedicate a full week of their lives to make sure their campers have a positive camp experience. Camp Surefire would not be possible without them!

Due to our high retention rate, counselor positions at Camp Surefire are becoming increasingly more competitive. All counselors must complete a detailed application process, including relevant background checks. Counselors who have come up through the ranks (as campers/LITs) are given preference. We also have a strong partnership with the URI Pharmacy and Dietitian programs.

All counselors complete online training modules prior to coming to camp. They also report to camp one day early to receive additional on-site training from our medical staff. This training provides the counselors with an excellent learning experience, but also helps ensure a positive and safe experience for all of our campers.

Each and every person at camp, whether it’s a camper or one of my best friends or a guest speaker, has made an impact on my life and has touched my heart.
