Volunteer Opportunities

“Imagine sitting down to dinner with over 75 other children who also check their blood sugar, measure their food portions, count their carbohydrates, and take an insulin injection or use their insulin pump.  Well, life is not so unusual or strange…there are others just like you who have to do the same.  And they are having a great time!  This is the magic of camp!”

Our Medical Staff & Volunteers

Camp Surefire is run by a dedicated team of volunteers. The Camp Medical Director, Dr. Gregory Fox, has volunteered as the camp doctor for the past eleven years. Maggie Jarrell and Anna Bertorelli have led and coordinated the team of Certified Diabetes Educators, nurses, dietitians, and nutritionists who generously volunteer each summer. Camp Surefire would not be possible without the efforts of all the volunteer medical staff. Their presence is critical at every meal, snack, and camp activity as well as during all hours of the night. Our volunteer operations crew ensures all the logistics and supplies are in order, while the professional staff at Alton Jones guarantees world class facilities, food, and lodging.

Our Counselors

Camp Surefire Counselors are an impressive group!  Many are current college students at URI, CCRI, BCC, RIC, and Brown University, studying pharmacy, nursing, nutrition, education, and medicine.  Typically, half of the counselors are returning counselors and/or former campers.  About half of the counselors have diabetes themselves.  Our counselors bring years of camp experience– including Camp Surefire, other diabetes camps, YMCA camps, athletic camps, and Scouting camps– to the table.  They are active in their school and local communities working and volunteering.Their activities include: tutoring, mentoring, teaching Sunday school, assisting people with disabilities, serving as residence life advisors, volunteering for Ronald McDonald House, Big Sisters and Salvation Army.  Camp Surefire Counselors are required to complete ten hours of online training and report to camp one day early to receive additional onsite training from a team of medical professionals.  This training provides the counselors with an excellent learning experience, but also helps ensure a positive and safe experience for all of our campers.

To become a counselor, please click here to fill out the online registration.  Please note, all counselors will be required to complete a background check conducted by the Attorney General’s Office of Rhode Island.
